Did You Know? Protective Headwear

American Work Safety sells hard hats, bump caps, face shields, and other headwear to protect from blunt trauma and impact shock.

Hard hats that meet the ANSI Z89.1-2003 standard are required when working in an environment where there is potential for injury to the head from falling objects and exposure with electrical conductors that could have contact with the head. Hard hats that meet these requirements are classified as Type 1 (top head protection) and Type 2 (lateral and top head protection). They are also classified based on their electrical insulation: Class C provides no electrical protection, Class G is rated up to 2,200 volts, and Class E is rated up to 20,000 volts. Finally, the suspension in a hard hat (which improves its ability to reduce the shock of impacts and deflect blows more easily) is typically eighter 4-point, 6-point, or 8-point, with more points of suspension improving the effectiveness.

Bump caps are a non-OSHA-certified lightweight alternative to hard hats, and should be used only in situations where a hard hat is not OSHA-required.

Face shields are meant to provide secondary high impact protection, as per ANSI Z87.1 - High Impact. Proper eye protection must still be worn when wearing a face shield.

Protective headwear should be replaced immediately after a heavy blow to the head or any kind of electrical shock, and should be checked regularly for dents, cracks, or splits.
